October is upon us, which means that Halloween is finally close by. This is the time of year to watch Halloween movies and start debating on which one is the best. “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” is the movie always referenced. But I decided to review another one of Tim Burton’s Films instead, “Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.” This movie is often forgotten or underrated when people refer to the best movies of Halloween. 📷
It is a fresh and unique story, which gives its own take on what happens to us when we die. This Motion Picture was released on September 16th, 2005 and was Directed by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson. According to the synopsis, the families of Victor and Victoria have arranged for them to wed. Victor becomes very nervous of the ceremony and practices his wedding vows in the forest. In doing so, he accidentally marries Emily, a corpse. He’s taken to the underworld with Emily and has to find a way to come back to earth to be with Victoria. This feature stars Johnny Deep, Emily Watson, and Helena Bonham Carter as the characters Victor, Victoria, and Emily (The Corpse Bride) respectively.
The score of the movie is also a huge highlight. This movie is also a musical and in every scene the music, either in the background or sung by the characters, plays beautifully. The songs help the story progress and even a simple piano in the film advances the plot by demonstrating the differences between Victors relationships with Victoria and Emily. Even the color scheme is absolutely breathtaking.
The movie is filmed in Stop motion animation and shows a unique view on life and death. The underworld is so lively and colorful while the real world is so dull with barely any color present. The colors play a role in the story arc as well because at the end of the movie when the people from the underworld come to the real world you finally get to see personality, love, and happiness come from humans and it’s shown when the color from the underworld seeps into the real world. Overall, the Corpse Bride is a criminally underrated Halloween movie with an incredible cast, plot and score.
