Even though we’re all back in school already, summer weather is still here until at least September. With summer weather, we could all use a few tips to keep our own hair healthy and hydrated. Now, there are many different types of hair and ways of categorizing them. Each hair type and texture benefit from different hair care techniques. For the sake of this article, however, we will focus on some hair types and textures from Andre Walker’s system. Since there are so many categories of hair, you should take some time to look into your own hair types. You can find more information about hair types here.

Some hair care tips work for all or almost all hair types. For example, coconut oil is a widely used product for many hair types. Quick Tip: Coconut oil hydrates all hair except oily hair.

Tip #1 for all hair types: DIY Hair spray that works as a sunscreen for your hair. Quick Tip:It also helps calm frizz for curly and wavy hair

Step 1

Get together: a bowl, distilled water, avocado oil, pure/clear aloe gel and a small spray bottle.

Tip #2 for all hair types: Before going swimming, dampen your hair with clean water. Your hair is essentially a sponge and will soak up whatever liquid is on it. Clean water is the best way to prevent hair from being damaged by chlorine and seawater.

Tip #3 for all hair types: After being in the pool or ocean, wash your hair with low irritation products. Your hair is most sensitive after spending time in chlorinated or salty water.

Oily and dry hair couldn’t be more different. They both present unique challenges for maintaining them. There are also many different ways to deal with them. Some ideas that help with oily hair have to do with what products you use. Some helpful ways to manage oily hair can be found here. Occasionally using clarifying shampoo will get rid of excess oil in your hair. To help prevent the build up of oil in your hair, you could change how you use your products. Instead of putting conditioner on all of your hair, avoid putting conditioner on the top of your head. Tips that help with dry hair range from using different products to getting a trim every once in a while. For example, prenatal vitamins help your hair grow healthier. Also, instead of air drying your hair, wrap it with a towel. More tips can be found here.

Another set of total opposites on the hair typing scale that could always use some summer hair care tips are straight and “kinky” hair, both hair type categories are from Andre Walker’s hair typing system. If you have straight hair, it is very important to choose your hair products carefully. For instance, you will need the right conditioner to keep your hair from drying out(get moisturizing conditioner) or becoming too oily(get basic conditioner for the ends of your hair). More tips for straight hair can be found here. “Kinky” hair can be difficult to manage in the summer heat-especially if you want to wear it natural. In our Georgia humidity, one option with natural hair is to use humectants-such as honey or glycerin- to take in moisture for your hair from the air around you. Quick Tip: If you hate having frizzy hair, don’t use humectants in humid weather! Another way to help manage natural hair in the summer is to use lighter hair care products. By using lighter products and using them less often, you won’t have to worry as much about washing your hair all the time. For more ways to maintain natural “kinky” hair in the summer click here.

What’s your hair care routine? Or do you even have one? Not everyone follows a hair care routine, but doing so does help keep your hair healthy and beautiful in the summer. One example of a good hair routine for straight hair is by Wendy from Wishtrend TV. In her ‘My Secret Hair Care Routine’ video, she mentions a few different tips and steps that she keeps in mind for her own hair routine. For example, Wendy says it’s better to shampoo a night than in the morning. Her routine includes these steps and more: 1) comb your hair before showering; 2) lightly massage your scalp; 3) once a week, spray sparkling water on the roots to help resolve dead skin cells. Quick Tip:Since this routine is best for straight or slightly wavy hair, I would not recommend using it on curly or ‘kinky’ hair. Making your own hair regimen would depend on your hair type, product preference and your usual choice of hair style.

All these tips can be used with low-cost budgets and will help you maintain healthy and heavenly hair this summer. Hair care techniques and treatments are forever improving. New and different ways to maintain your hair are always around to try out. So with that in mind, always remember: if you know your hair type and texture, you will be able to figure out the best way to care for you hair.
