Teacher of the Year By: Nia Kidd

Congratulations to Ms. Jennifer Zaino for being named South Gwinnett’s Teacher of the Year for this school year! Ms. Zaino was nominated by her colleagues along with the other three finalists, art teacher, Kelly Valdez, career and technology teacher Rebecca Streetman, and math teacher Michelle Ihrig. Ms. Zaino won Teacher of the Year last Thursday in the theatre, where she was honored by Principal Dorothy Jarrett and teachers and staff.

Teacher of the Year for the 2019-2020 academic year, finally made its way to South Gwinnett!! The nomination process is finally complete, with 36 teachers being nominated. The rigorous nomination process, seen below, is done by the South Gwinnett Teacher of the Year Committee with criteria of how each teacher is nominated for Teacher of the year.

Teacher of the Year (TOTY)

To be a candidate for Teacher of the Year you have to meet this criteria:

• A certified classroom teacher with a clear and renewable certificate in good standing in Pre-K through Grade 12, including special education, physical education, art, music, and media specialists with three or more years teaching experience (experience does not have to be limited to the state of Georgia or GCPS). Counselors are not eligible. Instructional Coaches who teach at least one class period of students are eligible to participate.

• An exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled teacher who is planning to continue in active teaching status.

• An innovative teacher who inspires students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn.

• A poised and articulate teacher who has the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues.

• A teacher who plays an active and integral role in the community and school.

• A teacher willing to participate in the system-wide and state-wide TOTY process (if applicable).
