Imagine growing up in a house with brothers who are soccer phenoms.
With unbelievable talent, comes unbelievable responsibilities, especially financial responsibilities. For this and many other reasons, I have never been one to ask for what I want. In general asking for something has never been my cup of tea. However, my twin and K-pop changed all of that.
Out of my peripheral view, I watched as my twin approached me.
“Do you want to go to the KARD concert?” She asked as she plopped herself into the chair next to me.
“I mean yea that would be nice if we could go.” I responded while exiting out of the many notifications I had on my phone.
“Well,” She began “ We can go.”
The sentence was like a gust of wind and I barely heard her mouth open before it closed. I looked at her as my brain finally processed what she spoke, but that didn’t do much as I was still confused.
“What?” I questioned as my curiosity got the best of me.
“I asked Daddy if we could go and he said yes!” She exclaimed.
I froze for a second and stared at her with many thoughts in my head.
Anelé is better than me at asking things from our parents but I was still surprised she asked them and managed to get a yes. As my sister, Anelé was really similar to me in terms of interest and personality, but we weren’t completely the same. She would sometimes be less brave than me to do things like talking to the cashier or killing a bug, which would cause me to do it sometimes, but I don't blame her because I act the same way.
We are really close to each other and stick together so often that my parents would sometimes call us Thing 1 and 2. In the end, I would always choose to give my kidney to her over anything else, even though we do have frequent arguments. But this situation didn’t call for an argument.
“You’re joking! How did you manage to convince him!?” I said with disbelief
“I told him about how we wanted to go to the concert and he said he would pay.” She stated.
I looked behind her to see my dad seated on the couch on his phone. I couldn’t imagine that he would spend money on a concert that didn’t benefit him in any way. I thought about how he would probably do this because he loved us a lot, but these tickets cost hundreds of dollars and it seemed like too much.
I still hadn’t got over my disbelief as we approached our dad. Anelé had mentioned that we needed to pick seats for the concert, so once we were close enough I was about to ask him about that when he asked us a question.
“Do you two want to invite any of your friends to come? They could just pay me later while I buy the tickets now.”
“Yeah!” Anelé and I shouted, as my dad laughed at us being the twins we are.
We grabbed our phones so quickly that I felt like Speedy Gonzales. Our friends are big K-Pop fans like us, so they were so excited once we told them, but they weren't able to keep that excitement for long.
I was silently wishing that all of my friends could go, but most of their parents didn’t have money to spend on a concert.
Just as I was losing hope my friend Jalyn texted on the group chat saying that her dad is going to pay for her ticket.
Jalyn and I became really good friends in 7th grade once we found out that we both had an interest in K-pop. She's 5’6 and can pack some of the hardest punches, but that doesn’t affect her personality. She is a really funny person and she may not seem the smartest, but she can be really smart when she wants to. Having Jalyn come to the concert is perfect since her Anelé and I can all converse about anything easily, making none of our conversations boring.
We proceeded to tell our dad that we’re just bringing a plus one and he quickly brought the seat before someone took our spots away. I was still really excited that we would be able to experience our first concert soon and quickly hugged my dad before making my way to my room to enjoy a good night's rest.
The next few days flew by as the concert date got closer and closer.
Sunday afternoon I dug through my closet for suitable clothing. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't be too hot with all the people that are going to be at the concert, but I also wanted to make sure I wasn’t cold. After a few minutes, I eventually picked out a thin and gray long sleeve crop top, jeans, and an airy jacket. Anelé dressed similarly to me in a black long-sleeved crop top and pants.
Not much later, Jalyn knocked on our front door. Anelé ushered her into our house as we thanked her mom for dropping her off.
While waiting for our dad to get ready we all watched youtube and had a little fun. Once the man of the hour declared he was ready to leave we hopped into his car and made our way downtown.
As we got closer to the theater I noticed a long line filled with people chatting animatedly.
“Is that the line for the concert?” I questioned.
“It probably is.” Anelé laughed.
Once we parked we left the car and went to join the other fans waiting in line.
In the time we spent waiting in the line we managed to get free fan art and made plenty of jokes to amuse ourselves.
I was starting to become excited as we made it closer to the entrance, but also a little nervous. Since this was my first concert, I had no experience and some of the people here have probably been to at least one other concert. I hoped nothing would go wrong.
Before my nerves could take over I was distracted from my thoughts.
“Oh, my scissors are still in my bag.”
I turned towards Anelé as she looked at me. The first thought going through my head was why did she have scissors!
“Just leave them.” my dad said.
“Ok.” She shrugged as she went to the bag check.
I watched as she passed the check and continued walking. I looked towards Jalyn as we both laughed at the situation.
Once inside the theater, we made our way to the balcony, walked down the aisle until we found our row, and claimed our seats, before sitting down.
Not long after I was waiting with my dad for food when all of a sudden music started playing. This music wasn’t ordinary. It was eardrum bursting, going to give you a headache, and Present Mic’s yelling type of music.
I felt like my heart jumped out of my chest and I covered my ears, as quickly as I could. Looking at my dad I could tell that he was also surprised by the sudden noise.
“I’m going back to Anelé.” I shouted.
He nodded towards me as I ran off.
“It’s so loud!” Jalyn yelled once I made my way back to them.
“I got so scared.” laughed Anelé.
We laughed as I sat down with them.
A little while later a familiar song started playing, and I got excited as I knew that the concert was about to start.
That concert was one of the best experiences I have ever had and if it wasn’t for Anelé asking if we could go it would’ve never happened. Her choice helped me to become more confident in asking for what I want from my parents and it made me even happier.
It was only less than a month after the concert that I was able to put my new skill to test. Jalyn asked if we wanted to go to another concert and with no hesitation, I grabbed my phone, called my dad, got an answer, and hung up the phone.
“We’re going to SuperM’s concert!” I cheered.
“Bet!” Anelé yelled.
