Olivia Gierson's memoir

Updated: Sep 16, 2020

Quarantine is probably one of the best things that happened to me because it gives me an excuse to stay home. The thing is that I hate going outside, so the demand to practice social distancing and staying home lets me stay comfortably in my house. The reason to stay indoors doesn’t matter to me.

I’m liking quarantine. It was never serious to me in the first place. Currently, I’m paying more attention to trying to excel in my online school. You may guess that I’m also liking online school because I still get to stay home, that is correct! The quarantine can be relaxing.

Sometimes, the first thing my parents would watch on television is the news. It’s the first thing you see when you turn on the TV anyway. I don’t remember the moment exactly, but my mother was reacting to a group of college students doing something dramatic, something serious in public. Just when I was wiping down the sink, Mother addressed the issue to me. As a result, I dropped the topic immediately. Mother complained about my carelessness towards something important as what was reported on the news. I still didn’t care.

The conversation went something like this, “Olivia, do you see this? These students are out in public protesting about their situation.” She began. “I don’t care,” I replied bluntly. “Olivia, you can’t say that!” Mother exclaimed. Of course, I don’t remember the discussion exactly, it was quite a long time ago. Nevertheless, it was about my disinterest in the topic on TV.

During my visit to my auntie’s house, the adults would look at the news at times. I would be bored, and seeing plus hearing the downhearted reports on TV wasn’t helping. I would whisper or think, “Oh my god, why are we watching this?” or “Ew, why the news?”.

I would say how the news isn’t a positive thing to watch. Even talking about the news is awful to me. I don’t like absorbing the announcements of deaths, robberies, a president making dumb decisions, etc. It all upsets me which is why I reject the news. It’s one of the things that can ruin my comfort in quarantine. The quarantine can be displeasing.

One Sunday, Father gave some quotes, “Time to rise up, and organize, and to take our position.” and “Represent God without fear.” I understood that he was persuading the leaders to take a stand. I mean, they have the role or the position in society to do so. I think he’s taking action in these conflicts by using his role as a pastor to preach and spread messages on Facebook using biblical scriptures as support. The quarantine can be encouraging.

Father told my siblings and me his former plan to show us the world. Not the world like the whole planet, but the world of sin. He wanted to show his Christian children how people will act in the world, usually unrighteous. In addition, he told us that he would research the latest events to learn more. I guess he’s teaching us these things so that my brother, sister, and I can be mindful of the actions people may take and avoid to partake in their wrong practice in order to stay holy and continue to walk the ways of Jesus Christ. The quarantine can be a creed.

Father is probably the most loving in our family. He’s bought so much food for the family, it makes him such a giving person. Although my father was a sinful man, he was able to find God which gave him joy and peace. If he didn’t become a Christian, he wouldn’t have found Mother so I wouldn’t be born at all or be religious like him. Daddy’s very humble, caring, noble, and lots of good things because it’s all in the word of God. He said that it’s his job as a father to teach me and my siblings about God, he just has so many testimonies. We still have to follow the lord no matter what. Sometimes, the family and I would have a bible study at home to keep our religion. The quarantine can be religious.

My father isn’t doing these things for no reason, he really wants to be affirmative to people during these sad times. Preaching is a move. My mother doesn’t watch the news as a way of entertainment, she’s responsive towards the reports. Watching is a move. These are just simple moves folks make to get involved in the present issues that are in our world today.

I see that people want to make this world a better place, and in order to do that, they step out. These issues may not affect your family or yourself personally but it might to others. It’s only right to reach out and support those people who are struggling because of these problems. This is your world you’re living in, you have the right to be concerned and take a stand.

I guess there’s nothing wrong with paying attention to the news. It’s okay to participate in a fight for a change for the better. Does this mean I’m going to take a stand and do something? Absolutely not, I can’t when I love to sleep and eat at home so much. However, I will try to keep an open mind in the future. The quarantine can be significant by teaching lessons.

Thank you, Ms. Ray, for reading. I hope this memoir presentation was good enough to get a B+ or -.
